June 5th at 6:30pm – Ava Farmer: Readings from Second Impressions

Ava Farmer Reads from her new book Second Impressions, a sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austin fan fiction is one of the largest literary sub-cultures in America, and Second Impressions is one highest acclaimed additions in years. Listen: Don’t let the term “Fan Fiction” fool you, this is not amateur work. 26 years in the making, Second Impressions is a “richly encyclopedic sequel to Jane Austen’s novels”, as described by Jocelyn Harris, professor emeritus, University of Otago
Where: People’s Books Cooperative – 2122 E. Locust St.
When: June 5th, 6:30p

Celebrate Our 5 Year Anniversary!

Dear People’s Books Cooperative supporters,

We are writing to share some details on an exciting upcoming event to celebrate our five year anniversary operating as a community owned cooperative, and to ask for your help to ensure that we continue to serve the community for years to come.

We are planning now for a summer fundraising event in Milwaukee on Thursday June 21st, beginning at 5pm, at the Riverwest Public House (815 E. Locust Street), and we wanted to invite you to take part. The event will feature food, refreshments, a raffle, music, and a short program with Christine Neumann-Ortiz, founder and executive director of Wisconsin’s leading immigrant and worker rights organization, Voces de la Frontera.

Christine Neumann-Ortiz and Voces de la Frontera members have been involved in nearly every aspect of the Wisconsin uprising over the last year, from marching and civil disobedience to filing lawsuits and collecting recall signatures. She will be joining us and speaking on the challenges that currently face Wisconsin workers. She will share her experiences working for social justice and immigrant rights, and will share her analysis of the state of the movement for immigrant and worker rights in the wake of the recall elections.

There are a lot of exciting changes happening at People’s Books Co-op, and to pay for these changes we have set an ambitious fundraising goal. Most importantly, it looks increasingly likely that People’s Books Cooperative will be moving to the Riverwest neighborhood in the near future. In order for this move to be successful, the cooperative needs to raise a significant amount of money. We hope to raise enough not only to pay for moving expenses, but to also help replenish our stock of books and increase our inventory of new titles. We are hoping you can help make this event a success and help us succeed in our move.

Will you help make sure it is a success?  Here’s how:

  1.  Be a sponsor for the reception.  Sponsors will be listed on the program and donate $25, $50, $100, or whatever they can to our co-op.  If you would like to be a sponsor, please reply to this email with the amount of your pledge, how you would like your name to appear on the program, and your current address. We will then send you a pledge form in the mail.
  2. Donate stuff. We need artwork, crafts, gift certificates, services, or cool items of any sort for our raffle and silent auction.
  3. Volunteer your time to help staff the event and/or to recruit others to sponsor the event. Ask your friends and family if they can help support our mission.
  4. Join us for the reception and be a part of the People’s Books Co-op community. Mark your calendars for the reception Thursday June 21st, at The Riverwest Public House (815 E. Locust Street). The reception begins at 5pm, Christine’s program at 6pm, and the after-party at 7pm.

If you would like to sponsor this event, can donate items, or want to volunteer your time, please reply to this email. If you are pledging, please tell us your pledge amount, how you would like your name listed on the program, and your current address.

Thanks for continuing to strengthen our community effort.

In cooperation,
Board of People’s Books Cooperative
